Mardi Gras is the last day of the carnival season. Mardi Gras is 47 days before Easter (Sundays between March 23 and April 25), so the date changes each year. Carnival begins on January 6th, and refers to the time of feasting and fun. The Feast of the Epiphany, on January 6th, celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Mardi Gras is the last day of revelry, before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins. Mardi Gras is a time of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting that occurs during Lent. Ash Wednesday, which can start as early as February 4 or as late as March 10, gets its name from the practice of putting ashes on foreheads in the sign of the cross as a sign of repentance. The ashes often are gathered after Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. Lent is the fasting period leading up to the feast of Easter and is a time of self examination and reflection. Christians often give up something during this time or volunteer to help others. The forty days represents the time that Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his ministry. Sundays are not counted in the 40 days during Lent.

Mardi Gras has become almost synonymous with New Orleans. Purple, green, and gold have become the traditional colors of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The colors were chosen in 1872, by that year's Mardi Gras Rex (king of carnival). It has been said that purple stands for justice, green for faith, and gold for power.
